2018 runner-up Tiafoe proceeds to the next round
Frances Tiafoe, runner-up at Millennium Estoril Open last edition, made his debut in the main draw with a victory over kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-3 and 7-5.
The young north american, ranked 31, didn’t disappoint the expectations of the crowd in the last match of the day at Estádio Millennium, although the final result doesn’t fairly mirror what happened on court – considering the six break points Tiafoe had to face, saving five. The north american will now be face to face with the only left-handed player in the entire main singles draw, the japanese Yoshihito Nishioka.
John Millman was another winner in this round. What initially seemed to be a promising combat against his compatriot Bernard Tomic, ended up with an easy win for the oldest of the aussies. The following chapter of Millman’s adventure at Millennium Estoril Open will have João Domingues name on it.
Lucky-loser Pablo Cuevas took his revenge against Salvatore Caruso, 6-2 and 6-2, after being eliminated by the italian in the qualifying. Cuevas will now meet Leonardo Mayer in the second round, since the argentine carried out his part against Dusan Lajovic, 7-6 (3) and 6-4. The match will take place next Thursday.
