Former top 10 Gulbis retires after dropping first set to Domingues
João Domingues books all-Portuguese match against compatriot Gonçalo Oliveira after Latvian Ernests Gulbis retires, citing wrist injury.
Ernests Gulbis portuguese campaign was short-lived. 23 minutes long to be exact. The Latvian, former top 10 and current ATP 169.º, retired from his first round match of the qualifying versus local João Domingues after losing the first set 6-1. Gulbis cited a right wrist injury which has plagued him for the last couple of days and prevented him from training normally. João Domingues, 259.º ATP and currently the fourth best ranked portuguese player, earned a Wild Card to the qualifying after being the best national player in the Cascais NextGen Tour will now face countryman Gonçalo Oliveira.
Ranked 392º. ATP, Oliveira made the best of the home crowd support and defeated Spaniard Iñigo Cervantes in straight sets ( 6-1, 6-3 ) to book his place in the second round of the qualifying which means Portugal guarantees a fifth representative in the Main Draw.
