Singles main draw at Millennium Estoril Open

The Millennium Estoril Open singles main draw ceremony took place this Saturday in the Slice Lounge in the Clube de Ténis do Estoril.  João Zilhão, tournament director and Carlos Sanches, ATP supervisor, were in attendance as well as Portuguese player Gastão Elias.

Defending champion Nicolas Almagro will start his bid to regain the trophy against Frenchman Benoit Paire. The 31 year old Spaniard, currently ranked at 57ºATP, was one of the first players to arrive in Estoril and should he survive the first round he might find himself going against local favorite Gastão Elias. The Portuguese #2 will start his campaign versus Malek Jaziri from Tunisia.

First seed and 2016 runner up Pablo Carreño Busta gets a bye in the first round and will meet either Spaniard Tommy Robredo or Russian Evgeny Donskoy in the second round. 2015 champion Richard Gasquet features as the second seed and will have to wait a few more days to know the identity of his first opponent in Estoril. The 30 year old Frenchman will face either Argentinian Carlos Berlocq or a qualifier.

Former US Open champion and fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro will make his clay season debut against in-form Yuichi Sugita. The Japanese, ATP 91º, arrives in Portugal after an impressive week in Barcelona, down clay-court specialists Gasquet and Carreño Busta before being defeated by Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals.

Local crowd has guaranteed no less than four Portuguese players to cheer for in the main draw. João Sousa, who features as sixth seed, will start is campaign on home soil against a qualifier while the two wildcards Pedro Sousa and Frederico Silva will face Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu and Uzbek Denis Istomin, respectively.
