Surf’s Up - Sousa and Edmund go head to head in the ocean
British No.1 Kyle Edmund and Portuguese No.1 João Sousa accepted Millennium Estoril Open’s challenge to suit up and try their hand at surfing under the careful watch of Frederico Morais, who flies the flag for Portugal at the World Surf League.
The fun experience took place in Carcavelos Beach, one of the best known surfing hotspots in the Cascais region, and both Edmund and Sousa took to the sea with great enthusiasm. Morais showed just why he is the best portuguese surfer of modern times and guided Edmund and Sousa through the “ocean” sets and, even though none could quite manage the fine art of surfing the lip of a wave, both players showed great tenacity in a very different kind of court.
Earlier in the day Edmund and Sousa visited the grounds of the new "Nova SBE" (Economics University) where, alongside tournament diretor João Zilhão and Frederico Morais, they played a set of mini-tennis.
A Sunday of new experiences with the lovely region of Cascais as a fitting backdrop. Edmund comes to Millennium Estoril Open as third seed and will start his campaign against either local favourite Gastão Elias or Australian rising star Alex De Minaur. As for João Sousa, the Portuguese No.1 will kickstart his bid to lift the trophy on home soil versus Russian Daniil Medvedev.
